Volunteer track workers
The Cass Scenic Railroad's "wye" track (about a mile from the end of the line at Bald Knob) had deteriorated and was essentially unusable by the mid-1990s. MSR&LHA volunteers worked for eight consecutive weekends in the spring of 1997 to remove the old track and replace it with new track and ties. Working conditions were often brutal, with rain or snow occuring each weekend. However, the track was completed and it now allows trains to be turned when necessary and it allows Shay 6 to go to Bald Knob by avoiding an excessively sharp curve in the main track.
