The alignment rod is in place in the cross box, and the pinion is in place to the rear, as well. What is being examined is the closeness of the gear teeth to the cross box cap. There are wear marks in the cap where an old ring gear chewed into it. To eliminate any confusion, the test bar is NOT the gear drive shaft!
